St. Francis' Church :
It is the oldest surviving European church in India. The chants of the Roman catholic was first heard in India from this church. Built as a wooden structure by the friars accompanying the Portuguese to India in the year 1503. It was later renovated by the followers of St Francisco in the 16th century.
The Dutch palace :
Situated at Mattancherry, the palace was built by the Portuguese and offered as gifts to the then Cochin ruler Vira Kerala Varma in the year 1555.The wooden ceilings of the coronation hall were incorporated by the Dutch and hence the name remained as the Dutch Palace. The greatness lies in the mural paintings done on the wall of the palace. Near about forty-five scenes from the epic Ramayana adore the walls of the bedchamber.
Chinese Fishing Nets in Cochin Harbor :
The fishing nets in the harbor are a wonderful sight. These cobweb like structure falls suspended from a wooden frame work forming a delicate silhouette beautiful to look at when the sun sets ,giving out shades of crimson.
Jewish Synagogue :
Placed in Mattancheri, this ancient synagogue was built by the Jewish community thriving the place in around 1568. Still preserved carefully, the religious scrolls and hand painted tiles from China decorate the structure.
Pathiramanal backwater:
Pathiramanal is a small island on the backwaters of Alappuzha,is a haven for hundreds of rare birds migrating from different parts of the world.This little Island on the backwaters is a birdwatcher's delight. Surrounded by the Vembanad Lake,stretching from Alappuzha to Kochi and the Kayamkulam lake, Pathiramanal is accessible only by boat.
Vijay Beach Park:
This park is located on the beach itself and allows you to enjoy yourself in variety of ways. The park is run by District Promotion Council and pretty nice place for children to have fun.
Thangasseri:
This is a seaside village replete with historical evidences in the shape of the remnants of an old Portuguese Fort and the churches that date back to the eighteenth century.
Mayannad:
This place is noted for the shrines and temples that dot it. The most important temple is undoubtedly the Subramanya temple that is said to have been consecrated by the Sri Sankaracharya, the Hindu philosopher. Marari Resorts are main attraction here.

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple:
Situated near Harippad, this is a serpent shrine under the patronage of a brahmna family, headed by a priestess. The ancient shrine is an internationally renowned pilgrim centre of the Serpent God Nagaraja. Sarpa Yakshi and Naga Yakshi are the beloved consorts of Nagaraja. It is believed that Nagraja as the installed diety of Mannarasala is endowed with the form of Hari (Lord Vishnu) and the spirit of Lord Shiva.

Better known as St. Sebastian Church, is situated 22 km north of Alleppey. It is one of the most important pilgrim centres of Christians in Kerala, established by Portuguese missionaries, which is near Sherthallai. The feast of St. Sebastian is held here every year.
Pathiramanal Island:
This is a small island in Alleppey (Alappuzha) about 10 acres in area and is a favorite residing place of hundreds of rare migratory birds, which arrive here from different parts of the world. The island is accessible only by a boat.
Chavara Bhavan:
Chavara Bhavan is located 6 km away from Alleppey and is accessible only by boat. It is the ancestral home of the blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara. It is now a holy shrine and spiritual resort where thousands of devotees gather for prayer. Here, a 250-year-old historically important beacon of light is preserved intact in its original and primitive form.
Nehru Cup Boat Race:
This famous boat race of Kerala takes place on the second Saturday of August each year. It's held on Vembanad lake to the east of the town. Tickets for the race are available on the day from numerous ticket stands on the way to the lake where the race is held. The race is now repeated during the January tourist season as the ingeniously named Tourism Snakeboat Race.
Pallana:
Pallana Kumarakodi is the place where Kerala's poet Kumaran Asan takes his eternal rest. It is now preserved as 'Asan Smarakam' by the State Cultural Department.
Edatuya Church:
Situated 24 kms. away from Alappuzha, on the Alappuzha - Thiruvalla Road. Established in 1810, the church is dedicated to St. George. It is believed that prayers and offerings at this church help to heal all mental disorders and other ailments. During the annual feast (5th, 6th, 7th of May) pilgrims from all parts of South India, irrespective of caste and creed, visit the church and seek the blessings of the saint.
Kuttanad:
Kuttanad is an expanse of water-logged land lying below sea level. It bears strong resemblance to Holland in terms of geographical features.ord Vishnu) and the spirit of Lord Shiva.
Karumadi:
This village is famous for its Karumadi Kuttan, a black granite figure of the Buddha believed to be of the 9th-10th century period. Karumadi village is situated near Ambalapuzha, 14 km from Alappuzha.
Krishnapuram Palace:
The Krishnapuram palace is located at a distance of 47 km at Kayamkulam. The double storied palace contains one of the greatest Mural panels in Kerala. The 18th century Krishnapuram Palace is a typical example of Kerala Architecture.
Chavara Bhavan:
The ancestral home of the blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, lies 6 km. from Alappuzha. Thousands of devotees gather at this shrine. It can be reached only by boat from Alappuzha.

These regions are famous for farming over reclaimed land from the backwaters. The area is protected by dikes built all around and reminds visitors of the famous dikes of Netherlands. A cruise along the canals here is quite a memorable experience.
